Sandoval Lake is a “dipper lake” formed generations ago by the changing waters of the Madre de Dios River, and is considered by tropical forest specialists as the best and most attractive lake in the Peruvian rainforest. This particular lake has one of the largest and most accessible populations of Giant Otters in danger of extinction in Peru, huge Black Cayman and Paiche 10 feet long, the largest freshwater fish in the world. Once it spread throughout South America, the giant Otter was hunted almost to extinction and is now one of the most vulnerable mammals on the continent. However, Lake Sandoval has a prosperous and healthy population, and from the comfort and stability of the catamarans, guests have the opportunity to see these powerful predators while fishing and having fun in the lake, as well as a lot of colorful birds, and reptiles.

The lake is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in the Amazon Rain forest . It is easy to reach from Puerto Maldonado, despite its closeness to the city the ecosystem is well preserved as it is inside the Tambopata National Reserve
Start our exciting day with a short walk to Peurto Capitania to board the motorized boat for a cruise down the Madre de Dios River. Along the way be on the lookout for Ronscos, a giant cavy rodent native to South America, related to the famous Guinea Pig. It’s also possible to sight Caimans(crocodiles), turtles, and different species of birds such as the Heron and Cormorants.
After reaching the checkpoint at the Sandoval reserve, head over to our lodge for a scrumptious lunch. Spend plenty of time relaxing and connecting with your surroundings. Later, we start our 2/3 hour jungle walk through the Amazon Rainforest. Witness 500-year-old trees like the great Kapok tree and a variety of other flora and fauna. At the end of the trail, take a small canoe boat ride and see giant otters, the black caiman and many different species of birds and monkeys.
We stop for a delicious lunch along the river bank, enjoy a picturisque view overlooking the Sandoval Lake and the Amazonian Jungle. Have lunch with amazing views of the amazon forest and lake. Return by walking to our boat at the Madre de Dios River and enjoy the sunset as we cruise through the river back to Puerto Maldonado.
NOTE: We recommend that you bring extra drinking water, even though there are a few places to purchase more water, they are a bit on the pricey side.

If you would like to avoid the high credit card fees in Peru, you may pay in cash at our office (US dollars or Peruvian soles) here in Cusco. There are many ATMS within the historical center to withdraw money. You can also pay by VISA or PAYPAL online but you will have to pay a 5.5% service fee, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. To pay your balance through PAYPAL, you need to log into your PAYPAL account and use our email address samcorporations@gmail.com to complete your payment
