There are many good reason to visit these Inca ruins and birding definitely adds to the long list. The habitat surrounding the ruins are probably the best place to see Inca Wren and another elusive endemic like Parodi’s Hemispingus. Many birders see their first Andean Coock-of-the Rock along the railway near Aguas Calientes and Torrent Duck by the Urubamba river. At the ruins, keep an eye open for flycatchers such as Streak-throated, Bush-Tyrant and White-winged Black-Tyrant.

A Birding Tour in Machu Picchu offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Not only is the cloud forest surrounding the stone city teeming with beautiful and colorful bird species, but the best birding spot near the ruins is the walk up to the Sun Gate, where you can spot Inca Wren and Brush-finches. Moreover, don’t miss the opportunity to dedicate at least one morning to birding the humid montane forest in the Aguas Calientes area, situated at an elevation of 5,578 feet.
Machu Picchu not only boasts breathtaking scenery but also harbors an impressive biodiversity. Within the 352,590 hectares that encompass the citadel and the surrounding mountains, a remarkable 406 recorded bird species can be found. This abundance of birdlife is truly astounding considering the sanctuary’s relatively small size. Immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes and remarkable wildlife of Machu Picchu during your birding adventure.
Birding in Machu Picchu is a must for birders worldwide. With its endemic species and extensive trails, it offers incredible birdwatching opportunities for both beginners and professionals.
The Sanctuary itself is home to over 400 bird species, 700 butterfly species, and 400 orchid species, accounting for 10% of Peru’s biodiversity.
This rich biodiversity is a result of various factors. The wide altitude range creates diverse temperatures, while the mountain ridges foster microclimates. Additionally, the constant rainfall from the Amazon Basin and the pervasive mist maintain year-round humidity.
Experience the remarkable avian diversity, stunning landscapes, and nature’s wonders during your birding adventure in Machu Picchu.
In the morning, we will embark on a scenic two-hour bus/van journey from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. From there, we will board the train to Aguas Calientes town, situated at an elevation of 2000 m. Along the way, as we traverse the picturesque Urubamba Valley, keep an eye out for Torrent Duck and White-capped Dippers, often spotted near the fast-flowing river.
During the afternoon, we will immerse ourselves in birdwatching at the botanic garden. Here, we have the opportunity to encounter a variety of fascinating species, such as the Green Hermit, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Speckle-faced Parrot, Sclater’s Tyrannulet, Glossy-black Thrush, and the endemic Masked Fruiteater. Other notable sightings may include the Torrent Tyrannulet, Fawn-breasted Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Slaty Tanager, Silver-backed Tanager, Capped Conebill, Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch, Orange-bellied Euphonia, and many more.
Embarking on a birding adventure and visit to the famous Machu Picchu Citadel (2400m), known as the “lost city” of the Incas, is a truly remarkable experience. The awe-inspiring setting amidst the majestic Andes needs little introduction, as its dramatic location on a narrow ridge overlooking the Urubamba River has captivated people through countless photographs and articles. The steep slopes that surround the city have contributed to its hidden status for many years.
The immediate vicinity of Machu Picchu has undergone deforestation, resulting in scrubland and bamboo thickets dominating the landscape. Within these habitats, we may encounter the lively endemic Inca Wren, while pockets of forest can still be found along the river valley. As we explore, we have the opportunity to spot other fascinating species such as Mitred Parakeet, White-tipped Swift, the endemic Green-and-white Hummingbird, Collared Inca, Ocellated Piculet, Streaked Xenops, Variable Antshrike, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, Rusty Flowerpiercer, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Yellow-bellied Seedeater, and Hooded Siskin.
In the late afternoon, we will board the train back to Cusco, ensuring a convenient drop-off right at your hotel.
